International Travel to Combat Rabies On-Ground

The following photo albums highlight various endeavors to combat rabies at various locales around the world. These are real-world images captured by both Dr. Deborah J. Briggs and others who work with her in the fight against rabies. These are offered to show a diversity of locations and methods in addressing rabies. Readers will notice that there are a range of rabies clinics, educational endeavors, the distribution of rabies vaccines, and other efforts. The photo albums are organized according to general time zones.

These photo albums are not part of the global health course. These are offered here to give readers a sense of the diversity of global public health work. The captions are provided by Dr. Deborah J. Briggs.

When viewing these digital photo albums, please consider some of the following questions.

 

The Global Rabies Prevention Work

• Why is it important to combat rabies face-to-face and on-ground sometimes?
• How may the local human and animal health workers be empowered to combat rabies from afar?
• Why do rabies control endeavors have to be sustainable over the long-term at the various local environments?
• What are some of the differences in facilities and equipment that various governments have in fighting rabies?
• Why would it be important to respect local customs in global health endeavors?
• Why are the anti-rabies endeavors different in each of the locales? Which seem more effective than others? Why?
• How casual is the contact between people and dogs in the photos?

In the United States...

• Even though efforts in the US are not shown in the photo albums, what are some of the anti-rabies efforts going on in this country? Why is pet vaccination against rabies so critical to the public health effort stateside?
• What sorts of animals may carry and transmit rabies? List as many as possible.
• Which are the most common animals to transmit rabies in various parts of the States? Why?

The Importance of Public Education

• Why is education such an important tool in the fight against rabies?
• Why is rabies education infused in the curriculum of some countries?
• Why are children (of all ages) an especially important group to reach out to in terms of rabies information?
