Term: mouthparts
Definition: Comprised of the labrum (upper lip), mandibles (jaws), maxillae (paired structures that move at right angles to the insect’s body), and labium (lower lip)

Definition: An insect part used to detect orientation and motion; chemical cues; and sound
Card 3:
Term: abdomen
Definition: The space that contains the majority of insect organ systems and reproductive organs

Term: thorax
Definition: A part of the body between the neck and the abdomen

Term: exoskeleton
Definition: A hard protective covering on the outside of the body

Term: compound eyes
Definition: An organ consisting of units of ommatidia, designed for the perception of movement and light intensities

Definition: Stylets or other mouthparts that enable the sucking of liquids

Definition: A siphoning mouthpart used to suck liquids

Definition: The egg-laying device in female insects

Definition: A tube-like structure that runs from the mouth to the anus and comprises the insect digestive system
